Recommended reading: The Big Tiny by Dee Williams

Thinking about downsizing? Want to know what living in a tiny house is actually like? Looking for an inspiring, hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking book to read?

The Big Tiny is a “Built-It-Myself Memoir” by Dee Williams, one of the premier educators about living tiny. From living in a big house with a big mortgage to taking the leap and building her own tiny house, Dee’s book will make you laugh out loud and reconsider life. It was refreshing to read something so honest and relatable – I could definitely see myself accidentally screwing my hair to the side of a house if I tried to build one myself.

From her site:

“The Big Tiny is the story of how one woman built her own house with her own two hands – all 84 square feet of it – and discovered that the important stuff in life isn’t stuff.

Admitting that I’m ‘happy enough’ makes me wonder if I’m falling short of my potential as a middle-class American; like I should want more out of life than this tiny house and the backyard, and the way it feels to sit on the porch and watch the sun come up…

But the facts are facts: I found a certain bigness in my little house – a sense of largeness, freedom, and happiness that comes when you see there’s no place else you’d rather be.”  -Dee Williams

Dee’s site is padtinyhouses.com (Portland Alternative Dwellings) and you can buy her book on Amazon here or order it from your local library.

Rewild Homes is starting a new build!

We will be starting a new build July 1st. The model that we are building is going to be on an 8’x16′ trailer (as opposed to our show model which is on an 8’x20′) and will be moving to Saltspring Island once completed. The layout will be similar to “The Walden”, pictured below. This is a more compact model and will be much easier to tow, and also won’t have a loft. We are really looking forward to this build! We think it will appeal to a lot of people because of its lower cost and greater portability. Stay tuned for the next post: bringing home the trailer!

The Walden is a 98 square foot tiny house built by Graham Berry in Aurora, Oregon.

New Home for the Show Model

Our show model has a new home at Pheasant Glen Golf Course in Qualicum Beach, open to the public every day from 7am-dark. Who wouldn’t get inspired by such a beautiful location? Everyone is welcome to come and walk through at their own pace. Although we won’t be on site, we have signs throughout the unit to answer most questions, and as always, we are available via phone or email any time.
